Class Notes
MAY/JUN. 2007 VOLUME 109 NUMBER 6

90 | The weather in Portland, OR, last winter was frightful, but your news was delightful. That is, what there was of it! It was good to hear from Bill Reisacher, an otolaryngologist--that's ear, nose and throat--who has joined the faculty ofWeill Cornell Medical College in New York.He and wife Cynthia traded a big house in the country for an apartment on the Upper East Side; they and their kids Mariana,Matthew, and William are "having a blast!" Bill's fonder memories of his Cornell days include "group therapy at Dunbar's."

Luckily for this column, your correspondent was a townie--Ithaca High School Class of '86. So, inspired by our 20th Reunion last summer, I contacted some fellow townies, who were happy to help. Go Little Red!

Boris Lieberman wrote: "After Cornell, I headed to NYC to work as Macy's gourmet food and candy manager and realized I needed a professional pursuit to avoid stacking chocolates for the rest of my life. Off to beautiful Boulder, CO, for law school, then to San Francisco, where I've been practicing business transactional law ever since (currently with Farallon Law Group). I got married last year to a family friend whom I'd lost touch with for about 25 years, and we had our first monster, Dylan Zev Emil Lieberman. My parents still live in Ithaca and my father still teaches physics at Cornell." Also in the San Francisco area is Anne Wilkinson, who's done interior design for BaMo Inc. since 1993. She primarily does hotel design and has gotten to work on projects "from Bora Bora to Milan to Tokyo." She's been married to Steve since 1996 and they had son Tate in December 2005.

After graduating with an engineering degree, Adam Hoffman moved to New York and studied music for two years. "Somehow I have managed to make a living playing music ever since!" he wrote. He's done so on cruise ships in the Caribbean, at a dinner theater in Mallorca, Spain, and for the last six years in Las Vegas. He does freelance photography and graphic design on the side. If you've ever enjoyed an evening at Just a Taste wine and tapas bar on the Commons, you can thank Jennifer Irwin. After four years as a Hotelie, she went to culinary school in San Francisco, then apprenticed herself to a pastry chef. She met her partner, Stan, and returned with him to Ithaca, taking over Just a Taste in 1994.

One of my high school study buddies, Karin Schwartz Bowie, MBA '91, has switched continents, having married a Scotsman. She also switched careers, from brand management to education, and is a lecturer in Scottish history at the U. of Glasgow. She and husband Jonathan,MBA '91, have a toddler, Emily.Manek Mistry, JD '93--whom I realize I first met in eighth grade French, mon Dieu!--took his biology degree to Cornell Law, where he met wife Jodi Backlund, JD '93. They live in her native Pacific Northwest, in Washington's state capital of Olympia, where they have their own firm, Backlund & Mistry.Manek has worked mostly as a trial lawyer, but concentrates these days on indigent criminal appeals.

Even in high school Chris Houck was big into computers, so it was no surprise to learn that after grad school at the U. of Illinois, he moved to Silicon Valley and has been "hopping between start-ups ever since."He's been married for eight years and has two kids.Mary Matyas is living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with husband Charlie Sadoff and kids Camille, 4-1/2, and Hunter, 7. She describes herself as a typical Manhattan working mom, with this explanation: "Charlie and I own and run a television production company called MIGHTY:PICTURES, where we make documentaries, reality TV shows, ads, and corporate videos. I'm the suit and he is the creative force."

John Wolff, MA '91, MBA '99, is living in L.A. with wife Colette and working as a screenwriter and film producer. He recently attended the wedding of Barry Logan and Sarah McCarthy; the guests included David Schleuning '91, Aaron Pempel '91 (whom I knew at Ithaca High too!), Ron Fritz '89, Eric Lukens '89, and Grant Whitney '86. John reports that Barry is a professor at Bowdoin College and that the newlyweds have a son Miles. John added, "All those track teammates in one place made me think of old friend Steve Peebles. Steve, if you're out there, drop me a line at jpw21@cornell.edu."

And the rest of you, if you're out there, drop us a line, too--or risk reading only about townies again in the next column! -- Amy Wang Manning, aw233@cornell.edu; Kelly Roberson, kelly-roberson@sbcglobal.net; and Tamiko Toland, stmoluag@yahoo.com.

91 | Greetings from the Lone Star State! Over the past six years I have been fortunate to work for Cornell's Regional Offices in Chicago and Houston . . . and I look forward to assisting with our class column for the next five years. It is a pleasure to see classmates during my travels for alumni and fundraising initiatives throughout the ten states in the Southwest/Mountain Region and in Ithaca several times each year. If you have not visited Cornell recently, I encourage you to make the trip. The campus may look a little different, but the excitement and exhilaration of being "on the Hill" never changes.

The Class of 1991 continues to set high standards for achievement. In 2006, we broke the 15th Reunion records for classmates in attendance and Tower Club members ($5,000-plus donors), and our $671,000 was just shy of the $703,000 record for dollars raised. We still hold the 10th Reunion record for classmates in attendance, total donors, and dollars raised. With outstanding leadership and class participation, we hope to break more records at future reunions!

Individually, there have also been many successes. Yanaka Bernal (field hockey) and JohnMcNiff (football) were inducted into the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame in November 2006, joining previous '91 honorees Stephanie Best (cross country/track), Richard Chin (squash), Tom Murray, MS '01 (rowing), Susie Curtis Schneider (track), and Karen Walker (basketball). Celebrating with Yanaka were teammates Jennifer Caci and Jennifer Bland Triolo, as well as her brother Stephen '01 and wife Maria Laughlin Bernal '01. John's teammates Mike Baudendistel, Dave Casey, Chris Cochrane, Marty Cummings, Bart Forlano, DVM '95, John Mahony '92, Craig Pappalardo, Eric Penttinen '92, Glenn Randall '92, and Craig Shiesley also enjoyed the festivities. Congratulations to Yanaka, John, and all of our classmates in the Hall of Fame!

The class was well represented as Cornell launched the ambitious $4 billion fundraising effort "Far Above . . . The Campaign for Cornell"with a spectacular dinner and dance party for more than 1,000 in Barton Hall. Cornell University Council members Jennifer Berger (who recently moved from Chicago to San Francisco), Liv Gussing, Elizabeth Bunta Haussman, CharlesWu, and Karen Paul Zimmer, MD '98, participated in the kick-off event. Kudos to Liv for making the trip all the way to Ithaca from Indonesia! Also serving on the CU Council are Nicole Bisagni Del Toro, Paul Hayre, Zinovia Spezakis, Andrew Stifel, and Mark Tatum. It is an honor to be selected to Council and recognized for outstanding leadership and service to the university--especially so soon after graduation!

Andrew Stifel has a new role as father. Andrew and his wife Amanda welcomed their first child, Emma Louise, on January 13, 2007. The Stifel family lives in Arlington, VA. Perhaps Emma will make Daddy proud by joining the Cornell fencing team someday! Bonnie Leff Kajiwara and husband Kevin are happy to announce the birth of their son Jackson Henry on October 31, 2006. Jackson had many Cornellians visit him at Weill Cornell's hospital in NYC and at home in Bedford, NY, including Jennifer Green Seltzer, Marla Feinman, Jenna Goldstein Bloomgarden, Gail Fishler Sirota, Sandy Matthews Haas,Melissa Sherman Rothberg, Susan Gross Scharf '90, and his aunt Elizabeth Leff '95. Bonnie has been with American Express for ten years and will continue as VP of international marketing for premium card products.

Christina Geurola Sarchio enjoys participating in a book club with Cornellians. Anjali Chaturvedi '90,Melissa Fast '88, Lori Giuffre, RebeccaWarme Hamilton,Mindy Schrader Kim, and Debbie Goldstock Ringel '90 have been reading books together for several years. Christina and husband Chad live in Alexandria, VA, with Evan, 4, and Raquel, 1. She is a partner at Howrey LLP in Washington, DC.

On the professional front, Saskia Monteiro Thomson has been honored in the Long Island Business News' ninth annual "40 Under 40" awards program. The award recognizes leadership in business, support for Long Island nonprofit organizations, and commitment to the community. Saskia is director of marketing for Marcum & Kleigman LLP. Craig Miles, a partner at King & Spalding LLP in Houston, was recently ranked by Chambers Global as a leader in the field of international arbitration. Craig spent three months in Argentina in 2006, but still made it to Ithaca for our reunion . . . his 12th reunion since 1991!

After 3-1/2 years as VP at the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Emily Kramer Neill decided to rejoin the private sector as business development and community relations manager for Constellation NewEnergy. The job offers a nice mix of generating new energy clients and maintaining a strong presence in the community. Emily writes, "Dayton and I celebrate five years this summer--and we added a little girl, Addison, to our family about 18 months ago. I live in Natick, MA, and would love to connect with anyone in this neck of the woods."

Ever wonder what it's like to teach at Cornell? Rob Hill guest lectures every year for a food merchandising class in the Undergraduate Business Program. Rob was recently hired as general manager of Global Beauty LLC in Sayreville, NJ. Global Beauty represents and sells products like the Prada skin care line, Payot skin care, and Puig fragrances and operates a 100,000-sq.-ft. packaging and distribution facility for large manufacturers. If you prefer shopping from home, check the Home Shopping Network and QVC for Global Beauty products. The short commute from Colts Neck, NJ, is terrific, with Robby, 7, Brian, 6, and Katie, 3-1/2, keeping things busy at home for Rob and his wife Liz.

A veteran of Starbuck's and Peet's Coffee & Tea, Maria Cleaveland now works for a boutique specialty coffee company called Equator Estate Coffees and Teas as the director of specialty sales, heading up the sales efforts to restaurants, hotels, and cafes. She writes,"Megan and I are still living in San Francisco with Zoomer, the craziest Jack Russell terrier you will ever meet. He is an old man now who provides us with funny stories to tell."Maria and Celina Alvarez-Rojo both wrote after seeing Christine Bubrick Bang '92, Tina Finneran '92,Mindy Schrader Kim, Amy Schmerl, Sarah Spillman '90, and Maureen Larson Tarantello in San Francisco at the January wedding of Evelyn Goodfriend '92 and Matt Kennedy '90. Letitia Todd Kim also shared news from the Bay Area. "Michael '90 and I got married in Napa in August 2005, and we had lots of Alpha Delts and Thetas at the wedding. He's a partner at a venture capital fund in Silicon Valley and I'm an assistant US attorney in San Francisco."

With these class columns, Ariane, Shar, and I (Kathy Kraus Bolks) hope to bring a little of the Cornell experience to you, regardless of where you live or what you are doing. We need your help to keep it interesting. Please share news with us via e-mail, through the link on our class website (http://classof91.alumni.cornell.edu), or on the News Form included in our class mailings and Cornell fundraising mailings. We look forward to hearing from you. (Please hold on to the news of engagements and pregnancies until the weddings and births take place.) -- Kathryn Kraus Bolks, klk22@cornell.edu; Sharlyn Carter Heslam, sheslam@berkshirepartners.com; Ariane Schreiber Horn, ams14@cornell.edu.

92 | I hope this column finds you busy preparing for your trip to Ithaca for our 15th Reunion on June 7-10, 2007. Like many of you, I'm looking forward to visiting (and showing my children) my favorite Cornell places, including the suspension bridge, the view from the top of Libe Slope, and my freshman-year dorm. I'm also looking forward to reconnecting with friends I literally haven't seen in years. It's amazing how quickly the time has gone by!

For information about reunion (and for general class and alumni information), you can visit either our class website, http://classof92.alumni.cornell.edu/, or the alumni website, http://www.alumni.cornell.edu/reunion/. Our reunion co-chairs are Ian Kutner (IJK8@cornell.edu) and Michelle Struble Bouton (mlbouton@hotmail.com), and our reunion registration chair is Maureen Coughlin (mikeandmo@hvc.rr.com). Our class is sponsoring several '92 reunion events, including a reception overlooking Libe Slope, family "fun in the sun" on the Arts Quad, a children's activity lounge, and a dinner on Beebe Beach. Hope to see you there!

Here are some recent updates from our classmates. For the rest you'll have to get them in person in June! Julie Brof Mayer writes that she is still at the Federal Trade Commission's Seattle office, handling consumer privacy and civil fraud matters. Julie also shared big news: in July 2006, she and husband Michael became the proud parents of Lucy Yi, a toddler from southern China. Lucy Yi turned 2 in December, and Julie writes that she "has brought much happiness (if less sleep) into our lives."

Mat Zucker shared his good news: "A short story of mine, ‘The World's Most Famous Colorist,' won a gaither.com contest to be published on Amazon.com. Naturally, I credit the Cornell English department!"Mat's story is available on www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000JMK8L0/ref=amb_link_3887802_3/102-4170634-3013738. This past fall, Vivek Chopra ran Doug Gansler's successful election campaign for the Attorney General of Maryland. Vivek has now joined a law firm in Washington, DC, Dickstein Shapiro LLP, and lives in Maryland with his two children and wife Amber--and he makes excellent BBQ!

Tanya Steinberg Schreibman, MD '97, a doctor specializing in infectious diseases and AIDS, lives in Florida with her two children and husband Dave. She is in touch with Allison Abel-Kahn, who lives in San Francisco with her two girls and her husband. I see Jon Kay and his family on a regular basis, as he lives about two miles from me in Bethesda, MD. Jon and his wife Eileen have children Anabelle, 3, and Jacob, 1. Jon runs his own successful business.

As for me, I am still living and working in Maryland and have two children (Noah, 5, and Tali, 4) and one dog,Matie, age 9.My husband and I just bought a new house, and we hope this move is our last for a very long time! I am still a local prosecutor, now specializing in the prosecution of child abuse, sex offenses, and domestic violence. Life is busy and never dull. This will be my last column as your class correspondent, as I will be turning over the job to someone new at reunion. It truly has been my pleasure to serve as a columnist for the past 15 years and to share your news with our classmates. I wish everyone all the best, and I hope to see you at reunion! -- Debbie Feinstein, debbie_feinstein@yahoo.com;Wilma Ann Anderson, info@WilPowerEnterprises.com; Renee Hunter Toth, rah24@cornell.edu.

93 | Happy spring! It has now been 14 years since we graduated--only one year until our 15th Reunion! There will be a few new junior members attending: Philippa Loengard-Almond and husband Weston welcomed son Edward on August 12, 2005. She writes, "I can't believe how fast he's growing. It's an amazing ride!" Laurie Mayes and husband Joe welcomed baby number two, Caroline, born in April 2006. Caroline joins big sister Jackie.Matt Kall and wife Naomi have a new baby and a new house! Hannah Lauren was born on August 1, 2006, and the family is living in their new house in Solon, OH.Matt is working as an assistant US attorney in Cleveland.

Julie Rosenberg Summers e-mailed, "Royden and I were married in July 2005, and last summer we joyfully welcomed our daughter Katie Samantha into the world. We live in New York City and I am working in the strategy group of a public relations firm. Royden was born and raised in South Africa, so I have been lucky enough to travel there several times in the past few years to see my new friends and family. Right now, however, I am really looking forward to an upcoming mini-reunion with some very old and special friends: I am meeting up with Holly Zax Shuter, Diana Matcovsky Nero, Carolyn Duarte Pierson, Tara Blitzer Benson, Amy Scheingold Turner, and Alex Migoya Freedman, all members of the Class of '93, for a weekend in D.C."

While some of us are welcoming new babies, others are keeping busy with older kids. Howard Berger writes that he is a hedge fund owner/manager. His free time is taken up with activities for his three kids, including being a basketball coach, softball coach, soccer coach, and shuttle driver. Amy Kusel Epner is working as a clinical psychologist. Her free time is also taken up with her kids--she has a 4-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter. Kathryn Sniffen Mitchell is a stay-at-home mom of two sets of twins, ages 4 and 7. In her spare time she plays tennis, reads, goes skiing, and takes care of her four young children. They recently moved from New York to a new home in New Hampshire.

Fixing up new homes is also a busy project for some of our classmates. Stephanie Haase is a portfolio manager of hedge funds. She recently bought a house, which she is fixing up.When she's not doing that, she can be found cycling, golfing, or surfing on the lake. She recently saw Monica Stamm and Charlotte Kanstrup Carrier for a girls' weekend in Las Vegas. She also saw Eliseo Rios when he came in from San Antonio to attend a party she threw. Edward Groszewski works in capital research and also gardens and coaches youth soccer, although he says he'd rather be traveling Europe. He and his wife are busy restoring a house they bought last year.

Others from our class are busy with careers and outside activities. Michelle Kimball writes that she is in-house council with Zurich American Insurance Co., focusing primarily on architect and engineer liability issues and cases. In addition she has been volunteering at an elementary school in the Bronx, working with underprivileged children there and assisting with field trips to help them experience the "real world." Natasha Priester Blackshear, MBA '98, started her own company and provides business and legal advice to help investors and entrepreneurs come together to form and build businesses. She also serves on the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth and as a director of Market Matters Inc., a nonprofit started by Cornell professor Ralph Christy. She and her husband welcomed their first child, Jeffrey Jr., on September 9, 2005.

Yvette Politis recently left her job at a law firm to take a position as employment counsel for Reed Elsevier Inc. Christopher Belz is a graduate student in the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. He is also an office manager at Manhattan Inst. for Psychoanalysis and a freelance bookkeeper. If that wasn't enough, he is also a keyboardist in the band Lungs of a Giant. Check them out at www.lungsofagiant.com. Randall Wood was promoted to deputy resident country director for the Millennium Challenge Corp.'s Benin Program (West Africa). He and wife Ericka Briceño will be living in West Africa for the next couple of years. Randall's latest book, Moon Living Abroad in Nicaragua, was published in August 2006; his previous book,Moon Handbook: Nicaragua, is now in its second edition and has become the best selling travel guidebook to Nicaragua!

Enjoy the coming summer! Send us news directly or through http://www.alumni.cornell.edu/classes.htm. -- Yael Berkowitz Rosenberg, ygb1@cornell.edu; Erica Fishlin Fox, ericazzz@aol.com.

94 | Greetings from cold, snowy New Jersey! It's the middle of February, and I'm typing this while trying to get my 6-week-old son Joshua Cameron to fall asleep by sucking on his pacifier! I can't wait to see this in print, because that should mean that by then he'll be sleeping through the night! It's hard to believe my Cornell experience was so many years ago, and now my main focus is managing the lives of two children under the age of 3! Anyway, enough about me. I'm the beneficiary of a bunch of News Forms from November through January. Let's get to it!

Rafael Vidal Davalos sends his regards from Blacksburg, VA, where he is an assistant professor at Virginia Tech U., and lives with wife Michelle, whom he married in May 2005. Also in the education field, Rachelle Bernacki sent news from San Francisco, where she works at UC, San Francisco, "teaching medical students and residents about geriatrics and palliative care. I also do research investigating better treatments for dying patients." Rachelle notes that she recently traveled to Vietnam with Allison Fishman. While Rachelle opted to move to the left coast, Chris Laughton is in the New England area, working as a regional sales representative for Bailey Nurseries,"which puts me in Ithaca from time to time. It's been a treat to revisit campus."

Another entrepreneur is Carl Meier, who lives in Nashville, TN, with wife Sallyanne (Mitchell) and daughter Maggie. By day, Carl is a commercial lender with Cumberland Bank, but in his free time he started a homebrew club. "We've been successful in competition," he says, "winning Best of Show at the Music City Brew-Off with our barrel-aged stout."

Lisa Sacks lives in the Bronx with husband Jonathan Richer and daughter Gigi. Lisa serves as executive director of Beit Rabban Day School and is a board member of Limmud NY. Another Lisa, Lisa DeLeo of Chicago, is a producer for Mr. Big Film, making TV commercials and documentaries. Barbara Zanini McGillivray and husband Jamie '90 live in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Barbara writes that she had her mid-life crisis last year. "I quit my job to be more available to my kids and bought an orange convertible Beetle. That seemed to calm my anxieties, so my husband is safe."

Oba Franco writes from Winston-Salem, NC, where he lives with wife Valene Sibley-Franco '95, and is manager, business development of Hanes Brands Inc. Oba says he spends his free time "taking care of my kids Ian and Sierra." Stephan Philopov wins the prize for long-distance note, writing from Bulgaria! He is a translator of specialized texts (from Bulgarian to English and vice versa) in the field of finance and economics.

Off the e-mail wires: Christa Shurman Kenin recently married Misha '93 in a barefoot ceremony on the beach in Montauk, NY, surrounded by many '94 classmates. In the last year, Christa also graduated from Brooklyn Law School, passed the New York Bar exam, and started a new job at the Reed Smith law firm, where she practices advertising and marketing law. The couple just moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side of New York City. Scott Lerner writes that he and his wife welcomed Jacob Marc, their first child, on October 27, 2006. The family lives in Manhattan. Scott got his law degree from Penn, and after eight years as a corporate associate practicing M&A and securities law, he left Dechert LLP in July 2005 to join a client, B&G Foods Inc., where he serves as executive VP and general counsel.

Here are some more updates, albeit a little old, from our e-mail solicitation last August. Rodrigo Tsutsumi is in South Florida, where he works as a revenue manager for Hyatt Hotels in Miami. Philip Soo lives in Los Angeles, is married, and has a toddler at home. He works as a patent liaison for 3M Unitek. Chris Twirbutt sends regards from San Francisco, where he conducts SAP development/consulting work with his own corporation. Shaye Siegel-Arluk is a dietitian/exercise physiologist in the private sector, working as a consultant and professional speaker on the topics of nutrition and fitness. In addition, she has three children: daughter Brianna and twins Madison and Dylan.

That's all we've got room for this time. Stay tuned to this space. We'll do another e-mail solicitation sometime this summer, too, but you can always e-mail me, Dika, or Dineen any time you have news to share! Michael, Lindsay, Joshua, and I wish you all a happy and healthy summer! -- Jennifer RabinMarchant, jennifer.marchant@kraft.com; Dineen PashoukosWasylik, dineen@wasylik.net; and Dika Lam, dikaweb@yahoo.com.

95 | First, a big thank you to all of you who sent in news! This month, I have the pleasure to report I actually had MORE than I needed to fill the column. So please bear with me if yours is not included. What I was unable to fit I have sent to Abra for the next installment.

A reminder. While it's great to get all your News Forms in the mail--and we do appreciate your sending them!--it's also good to receive your news via e-mail to me or Abra, or to use the news submission form on our class website. That way, not only do we get the most timely news, but it's also a lot easier for us to make sure we've got all the spellings, etc., right. Sometimes, with the handwritten ones, I wonder if our class has a lot of folks who went pre-med, if you know what I mean . . .

Speaking of doctors,Megan Nalevanko Falcone, DVM '99, is keeping busy as a small animal veterinarian at the Animal Clinic of Enfield, NH, while at the same time watching-- along with husband Dan '94, MAT '96--four daughters: Hanna, 6, Ella, 4, Claire, 2, and Norah, who was born last September.Meg writes that her "spare" time is spent gardening, scrapbooking, and "keeping up with our house, dogs, cats, and chickens!"

Hallie Bornstein Banziger (hallieabo@hotmail.com), a clinical psychologist in Montana, e-mailed that she recently gave birth to daughter Laine Alexi. Kevin Beirne (kevinbeirne@ cornell.com) is involved in a similar line of work in Connecticut, where he is an independent service provider in psychotherapy for individuals suffering from addictions, anxiety, relationship problems, and depression. Outside of work, he enjoys playing guitar and attending Broadway plays, and is considering writing a book based on his experiences. Kevin would like to hear from Michael Harssoma '96, so Michael, if you're out there . . .

In Chesapeake, VA, Jennifer Mathew-Lewis (jmlmd1@cox.net) is a family physician who also recently had a daughter, Elsa Abeni. Jennifer dreams of someday doing medical missions, such as Doctors Without Borders, and reminisces about studying in the Music Room at Willard Straight Hall "and then running down Libe Slope at sunset with my best friend Brooke Frantz Saltzman." One state away, in Maryland, Gary Noronha is an internist and director of research for Johns Hopkins Community Physicians. Joy Baldwin (joybaldwin@carolina.rr.com) is a family medicine resident who writes that what little free time she has she spends visiting her boyfriend in Florida. In a small-world story, Joy relates that he came to the US as a post-doctoral physics fellow through Ohio State and worked in the Physics department at Cornell our senior year. "We may have crossed paths over ten years ago and not known it!" Joy marvels. Joy, who fondly remembers life in Risley and misses doing theatre, also keeps busy as a National Health Service Corps Scholar.

A doctor/scholar of another sort is New York City resident John Papalia, who, after spending a number of years after graduation in "the real world," left his job to return to school and, in August, successfully defended his PhD in materials science and engineering. Also in Manhattan is Christine Chang, who is a vice president at New York Private Bank & Trust and spends her time outside work traveling, running half-marathons, planning events, and playing golf and Texas Hold 'em (not necessarily at the same time!). In Newark, NJ, Rick Greenberg started a new position as the Equal Justice Policy Fellow at the Inst. for Social Justice, advising Governor Corzine and Mayor Booker on their justice- related policies, including prisoner re-entry. He and wife Jessica welcomed their first child, Emma Lillian, on May 7, 2006.

Justin Berk (jberk206@comcast.net) is a familiar face to Baltimore,MD-area residents as the morning/noon meteorologist for WMAR/ABC television. He also co-hosts a radio show called Weather Talk (www.weathertalkradio.com) and spends his time outside of work with his wife Debbie and son Brendan, born in January 2006. Prior to Brendan's birth, Justin spent five years teaching college; now he writes,"My son has dominated most of my free time. He loves to laugh and that keeps me happy." Debra Tjoa (dytguard- online@yahoo.com) checks in from the arts world and San Francisco, where she works as an interaction designer and plays with a band called Coraline (myspace.com/coralinemusic). She invites classmates to check out her blog (http://blog.debtjoa.com/?p=229) for details on what she's been up to lately. She adds that she reminisces about the Slope Day '93 ("or was it '94?") that she helped put JAM bands onstage, that she would love to hear from Julia Liebeskind '96, and--oh, yes--that she got married last summer. Not TOO busy there, are you, Deb?!

Lastly, music-related news also returns us to our alma mater. In September I wrote about a concert being planned to honor classmate Maribel Garcia, who was killed in a tragic accident shortly after graduation. On Thursday, April 26, Samantha Shaber '94 was to perform on campus to benefit the Maribel Garcia Community Spirit Fund. Check out http://www.psc.cornell.edu/resources/recognition/maribel-garcia-award for details. -- Alison Torrillo French, amt7@cornell.edu; Abra Benson, amb8@cornell.edu. 96 | For the last decade I've wondered about the seemingly glamorous lifestyle enjoyed by Cornell class correspondents. Is it really an endless cycle of private jets, orchestra seats, personal stylists, and Corinthian leather? For the next five years, I'll have an opportunity to find out, living large and trying hard to keep it real while writing Class Notes every couple of months. First off, a quick self-bio: I'm waiting for the next big earthquake with my wife and three young (6, 4, and 3) children in Burlingame, CA, a small town hard by San Francisco Int'l Airport. Burlingame is (in)famous as the home of BALCO, pharmacy of choice to the world's most freakishly big, fast, surly, and acne-ridden athletes. I'm looking forward to hearing about all the amazing accomplishments of my classmates, and attempting to reduce such accomplishments to an entry in this column. On to the news.

Those of you who don't recognize the name Lori Penny didn't spend enough time reading the back page of the Daily Sun during Art History 101. You may know a Rothko from a de Kooning, but I remember Lori as a four-time First Team All-Ivy women's soccer player (one of only two in school history; props to Jennifer Smith '90, too!). Now Lori Penny Keeler, she is taking a sabbatical from practicing law to raise her children Josie, 2, and Shane, 9 months. Lori's ties to Cornell remain close. She married husband Dennis at Sage Chapel in 2002 and interviews hopeful applicants from around her home in Marshfield, MA. Lori is bullish on the next generation: "It is really a joy to see how excited these young kids are about the Big Red!"

Count Alpesh Patel among those from whom you hope to never need professional services. Alpesh is an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery at the U. of Utah Medical School specializing in spine surgery (not exactly the "safety" specialization for those who couldn't specialize in anything else). I saw Alpesh marry fellow doctor Angela in May 2006 in Columbus, OH, in a ceremony that kicked off with the groom on the back of a white horse in the parking lot of a Hilton. Also braving the 90-degree heat that day were classmate/groomsman Jed Sonnenshein and classmates/guests Scott Weatherford and Jennifer Henfey. Attorney-turned-real-estate-developer Jed married longtime girlfriend Ruth in August 2006 on the shores of Lake Tahoe, and shortly afterwards moved from Truckee, CA, to Los Angeles, trading in his skis and mountain bike for Lakers tickets and a renewed sense of style. Scott reports the October 2006 birth of his second child,Mason. The Weatherford clan (including wife Rebecca and big sister Madysson, 4) resides a bit north of the 49th parallel in Fruitvale, British Columbia, where Scott owns and operates a lumber company. Scott's outfit specializes in veneers, as "the dimensional lumber side of the business was closed down a few years ago when the import tariffs on Canadian lumber made it unprofitable to be in that business." Those moved by Scott's plight should contact their congressman.

Also enjoying fatherhood "immensely" is Matt Street, who along with his wife Leslie is enamored with daughter Alyssa, 1.Matt's job with Kodak caused the Streets to recently move from their street in Rochester, NY, to a different street in Fort Collins, CO. 1,200 miles west resides Adam Jed, who lives in San Francisco, CA, with wife Stacy and works as the director of restaurant operations for the PlumpJack Group, a local consortium of restaurants, wine shops, and taverns.

Nikki Cicerani wins the award for the most cut-and-pasteable news update: "After two and half years with Morgan Stanley's Private Wealth Management Group, I am delighted to announce that I have accepted a leadership opportunity as the managing director of New York for a not-for-profit organization called Upwardly Global, which helps highly educated immigrant professionals rebuild their careers in the US. You know your cab driver with a PhD in physics from Pakistan, or the security guard with a CPA from Guinea? That's our client!" Those who loathe their career should be envious of Nikki: "I seriously can't think of any other job I'd rather do!" She also reports that fellow Mary Donlonites Rachel LaMorte McCarthy, MPS '99 (married, with a "totally beautiful" 1-year-old girl) and Jeff Ainslie (married, with son Mason, 8 months) are doing very well.

Finally, reporting from Music City USA is Quinn O'Sullivan, who just opened a second location of his Dan McGuinness Irish Pub. "I never thought I would put down roots in Nashville, but this place is absolutely amazing." Quinn promises that anyone passing through town is sure to find an "enthusiastic group of alums who aren't afraid to have a pint or two."Other than that, our news cupboards are bare. Please help fill them when you get your annual News and Dues mailing! -- Ron Johnstone, raj6@cornell.edu; Carin Lustig Silverman, CDL2@cornell.edu; Courtney Rubin, cbr1@cornell.edu. 97 | It's reunion time! I hope everyone has planned a terrific trip back to the Hill to meet up with classmates and others on campus. There have been a ton of changes in classmates lives since we last met up five years ago. Here are just a few . . .

Caroline Moon (Caroline@adbrite.com) sent word to Erica and me of her wedding in September 2006 to Kevin Freedman in Napa Valley, CA. Her brother Howard Moon '00 was "man of honor," while Isabel Cordova, Traci Tsuchiguchi, and Jennifer Isacoff McNealey '95 were bridesmaids. J. Alexander McNealey '95 performed the ceremony, and his and Jen's daughter Lauren was the flower girl--a very Cornell wedding! Caroline says that she and Kevin met four years ago while they were both working at eBay. Currently they work for small (but this time different!) start-ups in San Francisco. Traveling the world, but planning on being back in time for reunion, is Matt Parobeck (parobeck@yahoo.com).Matt left his career as a process automation engineer in pharmaceuticals last year to get out and see the world.Where? Matt replies, "Everywhere!"He is currently based out of Saratoga Springs, NY, when in the US, and can't wait to see classmates at reunion.

Since graduation, Donell Hicks (dahesq@yahoo.com) has kept busy. He graduated from the George Washington U. Law School in 2000 and currently works in Orlando, FL, in liability, including construction litigation, commercial litigation, and general liability. He is also secretary of the Cornell Black Alumni Association and active in many lawrelated organizations. Looking forward to reunion to pretend he is ten years younger is Shawn Tripp (shawntripp@hotmail.com). Shawn updated us from the other side of the world--literally! He is currently teaching hospitality and tourism management at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore, "shaping the minds of tomorrow's leaders and all that jazz." He has enjoyed his time in Singapore and spending it with his new bride, Nicole Fredin, who teaches second grade. Heather Swayne Burns (Heather.Burns@microsoft.com) updates us from the great state of North Carolina. She has been working for Microsoft since graduation, first in Redmond,WA, and now in Charlotte, NC. She is excited to be back on the East Coast, especially since both her and her husband Quintin's families are there. They have extended their family with a yellow Lab named Foster.Heather is excited about showing Quintin the campus at reunion and catching up with friends.

Classmate Catherine Flynn (cjf6@cornell.edu) has been busy enjoying her first year of teaching at Danforth Middle School in the Syracuse City School District. When she isn't wearing her teaching hat, she is either running or dealing with homework (her students' or her own?). Catherine would like to hear from Craig Biondi and have a chance to see the herb garden at the Plantations again. Excited to be back on the East Coast and within driving distance of Cornell is Laura Barrantes (LMB11@cornell.edu). Laura and husband Todd Humora '96 recently relocated to the Washington, DC, area after four years in Southern California. They bought a house in Silver Spring, MD, and Laura currently works as the student activities manager in the Kogod School of Business at American U. Laura had a mini-reunion with Steph Gwinner, Valerie Novellano McLaughlin, Mijin Cha, Vik Milne, and Lori Marino '96 last year, gearing up for the big one this year!

Another newlywed is Heather Rauf Schreiber (heather673@yahoo.com). Heather and husband Holger were married last July in Greene County, NY, and honeymooned in Italy and Crete.Mike and Colleen Zampier Casey were guests at the wedding. Heather lives in Cromwell, CT, and teaches high school science at Farmington High School. She looks forward to seeing the campus and showing it off to her husband, as well as catching up with any classmates from BioGD 481. How many of you are working in genetics? Colleen sent in an update as well (cjz8@cornell.edu), letting everyone know that she had a great time at Heather's wedding. She and husband Mike are living in Maryland, where Colleen is a nutrition support dietician to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the U. of Maryland Medical Center. She also updated us on the birth of Bill and Mindy Shaw-Lund's son William in October 2005.

Sending greetings from sunny Arizona is Donnelly Nariss (dnariss@cox.net). She is living in Scottsdale with Rob Maysey, JD '99, and their dog Sparky. She is a sales manager with the Pointe Hilton Resorts, so if you are looking for a desert getaway, contact Donnelly! Donnelly also updated us on other classmates, including Tom and Sara Morse Frankie, whom she saw last year in Boston; Dennis Ortiz, who is working for Kraft in NYC; Jamie Murdock, now in Washington DC; Caroline Giroux Ziegler, who has a toddler daughter, Ava; Trish Sexton, currently working in Mongolia as a news anchor; and Christina Anton Benamati, who had a baby girl, Julia, last year.Whew! Thanks for all the updates! In addition, Donnelly told us she is a proud aunt! Her sister Shelby Nariss '00 and husband Bryan Younge '98 had a baby boy in 2005. If you would like to get more involved with Cornell in the Phoenix area, feel free to contact Donnelly, who is involved in the Cornell Club and CAAAN.

From the Garden State, we learn that Lindsay Greenberg Rosen (Lindsay.Rosen@pfizer.com) is keeping busy with her toddler son Zachary. Husband Jeff is working in finance at Forest City Ratner, and Lindsay continues to work at Pfizer, although part-time. They keep in touch with a number of Cornell friends and hope that some of Zach's friends will join him in the Class of 2027! Lisa Cinnamon Freire (thymesavorchef@adelphia.net) sends word that her personal chef company, Thyme Savor Personal Chef Service, is quite successful. She was featured in the October 2003 Washingtonian magazine as one of the top 15 personal chefs in the D.C. metro area. Congrats, Lisa! When not cooking up a storm, Lisa is Mom to 4-year-old Lexi and 1-year-old Nicholas. Husband Dan is a realtor in Northern Virginia.

One of the benefits of writing this column is that you get to share good news as soon as you hear it.With that said, I would like to be the first to officially welcome Conrad Anderson Nelson to the Cornell family. Co-columnist Erica Broennle Nelson's son was born in late January and he and big sister Adair are keeping her and husband Lathrop busy. Congrats to all our classmates on the new and exciting changes in your lives!

Finally, some of you have contacted us about when you might see your news in the column. Because so many of you were responsive to our plea for mail last summer, we have plenty of news to include in each column (thanks!), but limited space to write it. In addition, columns are written approximately three months ahead of time, so even if we include your news as soon as we get it, it could be a while before you see it in print. Please be patient, but if you think we might have lost your update, don't hesitate to contact us again! -- Sarah Deardorff Carter, sjd5@cornell.edu; Erica Broennle Nelson, ejb4@cornell.edu.

98 | Okay, classmates, let's face it.We all do it: the new boss, your next Internet date, your partner, your best friend's new lover, the neighbor next door, ourselves--we have "Googled" them all. But when was the last time you "Googled" your class correspondents? Well, I did so just now and here goes . . .

There's a Gregg Herman who's a lawyer in Wisconsin. Another lawyer from our class is LeihaMacauley. Leiha has recently been recognized with a "40 under 40" award, sponsored by the Boston Business Journal, for her extraordinary talent and leadership and her outstanding promise. This is Leiha's third award received in 2006; she was selected "Rising Star" by Boston Magazine and as an "Up & Coming Lawyer" by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. Leiha has developed, and now is co-director of, CHAP, the Child Health Advocacy Partnership, a joint venture of the East Boston Community Health Center, the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children, and Day, Berry & Howard LLP.

Turns out, that Gregg Herman specializes in family law. Speaking of families, some classmates of ours are starting and adding on to families of their own. Simon Arpiarian wed Felicia Ward of Dallas, TX, on Nov. 4, 2006 in Atlanta, GA. Cornellians in attendance were Tommy and Janee Carr McKinney '00, TJ Hart, Antonio Uceda-Velez, Josh Habib '97, Geoffrey Hoffman '97, Stephanie Solomon '99, and Jeff Han '97. Rita Doyle Pederson and husband Jay welcomed their second son, Thomas James, on Nov. 29, 2006. He looks just like his older brother Jack (they are 18 months apart). The Pedersons are settling into their home in Chester Springs, PA, just down the road from the Cornell Regional Office! Rita was sorry she missed the phonathons, though she had a good excuse--she was just leaving the hospital with her newborn! She welcomes any of her old classmates who would like to visit and provide free babysitting services!

Another Gregg Herman works in the area of sales and marketing for military modernization. Not sure what that entails, but I wonder if he can benefit from the branding and design talents of Lucie Macelova Ayres. Lucie is currently working as a strategic branding consultant for Hasbro, on a new product called ToothTunes--a toothbrush for kids that plays two minutes of a popular song while you brush. She is starting her own interior design consultancy and is enjoying Los Angeles, although she would rather be in Hawaii. Her husband Chris is working on his next book, so Lucie has plenty of time to hang out with the girls. She misses walking across campus just after a night of heavy snowfall, bells chiming, silence, and a great night out at Rulloff 's.

Gregg Herman ran a marathon, averaging 8-minute miles. Also circling in the athletic circles is Jacqueline CohenManiscalco, who is working part-time as a personal trainer at a fitness center on the Main Line. By day, she works for Merck Research Laboratories outside Philadelphia in clinical research operations. She got married to James on Sept. 3, 2006 at the Sofitel in Philadelphia. Jessica Berlinger Gilmartin was matron of honor. Other Cornellians in attendance were Amy Levitt, Eva Silvestre '96, and Christy Gagliano '96.

There's a Gregg Herman in the trade of decorative plaster figures in Kansas City. Definitely NOT in Kansas City anymore is Juan Felipe Rincon, who started an independent consultancy in mobile and wireless developer relations. He is currently working with Nill Holdings for the Nextel brand in Latin America. In his spare time, he is very involved with community theater. He played the fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof in 2006 and is designing the set for Thoroughly Modern Millie in the spring. He met his partner, R.C., while working on a show. For work these days, he gets to travel to "horrible" places like Rio de Janeiro and Puerto Vallarta--a stark contrast to the suburbs of Kansas City, where he used to travel frequently for his old job. Last summer, he saw Albert Choi, Lenor Marquis, Puneet Agrawal, and MarcWeissman in NYC.

We are sorry to announce that Anindya Majumder (known to friends as "Bappu") passed away in January. After graduation, Anindya returned home to Bangladesh to run his family's construction business, New Generation Construction Co. Ltd., and was very successful in growing that business during the last eight years. He was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago and was undergoing chemotherapy, but died in Singapore where he was being treated.

Our Gregg Herman is actually an associate brand manager . . . but has always been interested in the trade of decorative plaster figures. Before you bring Google up on your screen, please drop us a line to save us from having to "Google" you for news in the future! -- Erica Chan, hc31@cornell.edu; Gregg Herman, gdh5@cornell.edu.

99 | This issue's hot topic:What do you remember most fondly from our Cornell days? "Hearing the bells chime on a fall day with the sugar maple trees aflame," writes Heather Wdowin of Tempe, AZ, a naturopathic medical doctor who detoxes patients from drug and alcohol addictions using healthy-living philosophies and orthomolecular supplementation. When she's not working,Heather enjoys the beautiful Arizona outdoors by hiking, camping, and gardening. Soon to complete his residency in anesthesiology at U. of Penn, Dante Cerza will next begin a fellowship in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Another member of the Class of 1999 doctor contingent, Amanda MichelleWalker-Stahl expects to graduate from medical school this year. Becoming an MD is not the only thing Amanda's been up to the past few years; her extracurricular achievements include obtaining her private pilot's license and instrument airplane rating, becoming a certified ski instructor, performing pediatric neurology research, and completing wilderness paramedic school!

"Hot tubs in the freezing cold, dining room tray skiing down the slope, swimming in the gorges, late night snacks in Collegetown during finals week, Slope Days!" So writes Petek Salman from Istanbul, Turkey, where he works as the general manager of Petek Boru Sanayi AS, a family business in spiral steel pipe manufacturing. Petek recently quit his sevenyear banking career and traveled around the world for four months, and now serves as VP of the Turkish Cornell Alumni Association.

"I love Cornell in the fall. [I] miss Thursdays at Dino's and naps in Uris," wrote Homero Radway. Homero lives in NYC and recently welcomed a daughter, Jacqueline Blu. Aside from his job as an investment banker,Homero is active with the Jackie Forbes Foundation, a foundation he and his brother started in honor of their inspirational mother. In May 2006,Meg Karamitis Nikolov graduated from Harvard with her PhD in biostatistics. But her happiest achievement came a few months later when she welcomed son Aleksander Nikola Nikolov in January 2007.Mom, baby, and husband Piko now make their home in Manhattan while Piko attends Columbia business school.

Rhiannon Fernald Bakk-Hansen misses: "1) Swimming at Six Mile Creek; and 2) ASCE" (that's the American Society of Civil Engineers for the non-engineers). Rhiannon works as a part-time consultant for RSM McGladrey, providing construction litigation support and construction tax and business advice. Her most rewarding job, however, is caring for her young daughter Liesel. A recent activity included "teaching Liesel how to use crayons and enjoying every minute of it.Who said engineering degrees were worthless?"

Rachel Peris Ash, MBA '06, misses "EVERY detail: Class of '22 third floor shout-out! Jansen's fro-yo, Shortstop, Slope Day, After Hours, Palms." Rachel works as executive talent global project manager for American Express, lives in Brooklyn, and has been training for her first biathlon and triathlon. She graduated with an MBA from the Johnson School last May, and then got married at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens to her former Cornell Metro NY Regional Office co-worker Ethan '01. Truly a Big Red wedding, there were Cornellians aplenty, including bridesmaids Stefanie Jaron, Marissa Perman, and Carol Turner, groomsmen Marshal Peris '92 and Jonathan Peris '94, Rachel's new mother-in-law Karin Ash, PhD '99, director of career management at the Johnson School, and father-in-law Bill Huling '68, MBA '74. Rachel and Ethan honeymooned in Switzerland and Italy.

In other Big Red wedding news, RebeccaWhittles married Matt Angelicola on the island of St Croix. The couple was barefoot on the beach at sunset, surrounded by fellow Cornellians Laura Rossier,Michael Allard, and Dan and Sandy Saluke Saha. For their honeymoon, Rebecca and Matt cruised around the Mediterranean. Buffalo, NY, is home to newlyweds JulieWojslawowicz and Matt Bowker, who were married in March 2006 in Syracuse. Julie's roommate all four years at Cornell, Kristen Albano, was her maid of honor. Other classmates in attendance included Liz Dennis Aleen, Debbie Haym, and Steve Rockwell. Julie is an assistant professor of psychology at SUNY Buffalo.

Randi Rotjan was married last July to MIT grad Jeff Chabot. The wedding party was full of Cornellians, with Mukund Thattai and Sameer Ajmani '98 serving as groomsmen, and Bijou Bose '00,MandiWhite-Ajmani, and Rebecca Riba '00, MD '05, serving as bridesmaids. The Cornell influence extended even to the music and the food, as Mike '96, ME '97, and Elizabeth Germano Linnetz '98 sang and also baked the wedding cake! Randi is finishing her PhD in biology at Tufts, studying coral reef ecology. Rebecca Marcus and Jon Shumaker tied the knot last October. The newlyweds live in New York, where Rebecca works as a veterinarian and Jon works in real estate private equity.

After obtaining her PhD in clinical psychology from Gallaudet U., Talibah Thompson Buchanan works as a mental health counselor in Maryland. Talibah writes our final favorite memory of Cornell: "The friends I made." I'm sure many of us would agree.
