00 | Was it just me or was that an extremely long and cold winter? Well, all I have to say is . . . Hello, spring! And one Cornellian who I am sure will agree is David Pearce, who has been spending loads of time outdoors hiking, hunting, and fishing. He recently purchased recreational property in Upstate New York, where I am sure he is enjoying all that Mother Nature has to offer. In true Cornell style, David not only plays hard, but works hard as well. The entrepreneur that he is, David moved up to Anacortes,WA, and became the founder and manager of Complete Plumbing Repair Co. Also out West, Heather Vander Ploeg Corey is working as a clinical research associate for Medicis in Scottsdale, AZ. Heather has been spending her spare time running marathons and investing in real estate. Michelle Perales updates that she has been employed by the VIA Metropolitan Transit in San Antonio, TX. She focuses on public relations for the local transit agency. Over in Nevada, XaniaWoodman is keeping up with the L.V. social scene as the Nightlife editor of Las Vegas Weekly magazine and the owner/editor of TheCircuitLV.com. She is also the co-social chair of CHSNV and a consultant for the Las Vegas Jewish Federation. Any "extra" time Xania has is spent on blogger.AOL.com and renovating her home in Las Vegas. Xania, when do you find time to sleep! Staying on that side of the country, I am happy to report that Jon Felder wed Allison MacQueen on October 8, 2006 in Aptos, CA. Classmates at the wedding included Jeff Felder '02, Poe Tyler, ME '03, Joe Meldrim, ME '01,Matt Guercio, Ryan Buck, Greg Cardello, Chris Sabellico, Julie Miller, and Dina Frid. After a fabulous honeymoon in New Zealand, the couple returned home to San Mateo, CA, and their respective jobs in the Bay Area. I heard from my good friend Jeff Kozlow, who is now in the middle of his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the U. of Michigan. As Howie Goldsmith states, "Jeff is doing it to help people . . . really." But seriously, as busy as he is, Jeff is truly enjoying his profession, and hopes that we will all "keep him in mind" in the next 20-30 years. Are we really that old already? I just got carded last weekend, so make that 40 years for me, Jeff! Put it on your "calendar."You too, Howie! Here in the City, Anna Rips is working hard as an associate with Skadden, Arps, Slate,Meagher & Flom, while David Hollander serves as the program director at the Columbia U./Barnard College Hillel. David married Jaime McCarthy on May 28, 2006 in Old Westbury, NY. His wife holds a highly coveted NYC position as marketing manager at Time Out New York magazine. Not too far uptown, Jason Quinn works hard as a corporate bond and credit derivative trader for Lehman Brothers. He lives with his wife Maria in NYC. Donna Rancourt Frigon reports that she and husband Jereme have the best "job" ever, as they now spend most of their time caring for their new baby girl, Carli Jeane. The couple welcomed Carli into the world on September 28, 2006. Congratulations, you two! And last but certainly not least, Justin Minkel was named Arkansas Teacher of the Year and is now Arkansas's candidate for the national Teacher of the Year program. Justin teaches second grade at Harvey Jones Elementary School in Springdale. He will also become the first Teacher of the Year to take a year's sabbatical from his district to provide professional assistance to teachers around the state. Justin will serve as an adviser at the Arkansas Dept. of Education and as a nonvoting member of the state Board of Education. After graduating from Cornell, he earned his master's degree from UC Berkeley. He is fluent in Spanish and French and has studied two African languages. Justin met his wife Karen while the two were teaching in Harlem as part of the Teach for America program and is extremely grateful for her support. As for me (in case you've been keeping up with my columns), I did end up passing the Bar exam since I last wrote. I can definitely say that I breathed the biggest sigh of relief that day. Hopefully, that will be the last standardized test I ever have to take in this lifetime. Now I can just relax, have fun, and write about all of you! So keep the news coming! Remember, we love hearing from you and we love writing for you. Have a great summer! -- Andrea Chan, amc32@cornell.edu; Christine JensenWeld, ckj1@cornell.edu. 01 | Happy spring, Class of 2001! Her latest hobby is the new Karaoke DDR game, but she occasionally bikes, skis, and swims and hopes to get back in the darkroom to develop many of her rolls of film. While at UC, she had the opportunity to play the clarinet in their Summer Symphony. And most recently, she's been a "lab rat," as well as eating good Bay Area food, drinking good tequila at Tommy's in SF, and skiing in New Mexico in Santa Fe and Taos. Since her update, Jennifer was going to graduation and hoping to get a job in the real world! Cyrus Yunker checks in from Raleigh, NC, currently working full-time in controlled environment/greenhouse research and pursuing an MS in agricultural engineering at NC State U. In his spare time, he has enjoyed technology consulting, camping at the Outer Banks, helping to film short movies with his roommate (Rusty Lantern Productions) and producing theatre shows (Wake Drama) with him as well, spewing thoughts at http://wce.80d.org (and helping build websites for others), playing ultimate Frisbee or football, swimming, meeting up with his local 2600 group, and giving away hearing protection at music concerts for hearing safety advocacy (saveyourhearing.org). However, he'd rather be working for a think-tank, surfing, traveling, reading a lot more, solo skydiving, getting a pilot's license, and doing a cooking show. Cyrus most wants to hear from his next-door floor-mate who lived with Kami from Class of '18 dorm in 1996-97. If you're reading this, contact Cyrus. And finally, Cyrus sends a big thanks to Kevin Carbone for the multi-city concert tours they've done recently (Philly, Baltimore, Charlotte, and Asheville). She says she'd like to be pursuing a degree in a third foreign language. Since graduation, Lee Cower had been working in the health care industry. After serving as both a consultant and regional manager with Press Ganey Associates, she decided to make a career change. In November 2006, she received her MBA from Indiana U.'s Kelley School of Business and also started a new job with McMaster-Carr Supply Co. She moved back to the East Coast and is living in New Brunswick, NJ. If any old friends are living in the area, Lee would love to reconnect with them. She can be reached at lee.cower@ yahoo.com. And with that comes the usual March Madness, spring training, and a hepatitis test for Beyoncé Knowles. If you have not already booked your travel plans for our 5th Reunion, June 7-10, 2007, DO IT! Remember, this will be our ONLY 5th Reunion EVER! IBM Global Business Services is keeping me busy, and I am currently staffed on an organizational change management project for Pepsi Int'l. I am learning a lot, especially how to consume copious amounts of Pepsi, Vanilla Pepsi, PepsiOne, Pepsi Twist, and the occasional Dorito and Cheeto (minus the olestra). I went to see an off-off-Broadway show, Point Break Live!, way downtown in Chinatown--a stage adaptation of the 1991 classic starring Keanu Reeves, where the Johnny Utah role is chosen at random from the audience and is cued his lines from cards. "Utah, get me two!" I'd highly recommend it for any of you city locals. Consider the range of livings we make! Kate Fessenden, currently of Apple Valley, MN, is working as a dairy cattle nutritionist. After-hours activities include traveling, skiing, rollerblading, running . . . and milking cows. She remembers her classes and her friends most of all, and would like to hear from Beth Fuller '03. David Carlucci is in Rockland County, NY, "working hard on my re-election campaign for 2007 as Clarkstown Town Clerk." Since assuming his post as town clerk David has performed more than 100 marriages, instituted new initiatives in the town clerk's office, and created a new website, www.clarkstownclerk.com. Jacqueline Ripson is a counselor at Fairport High School, but finds time to be a Rochester Knighthawks Dance Team member, the Fairport girls' lacrosse coach, and the president of the Counseling Honor Society. One could definitely agree with her comment that she is "working hard and playing hard!" If she had her choice, though, she'd be "lying on the beach" instead. Rachael Garrett '01, if you're out there, Jacqueline misses you! JohnWiseman is part of a new company called Thrillist, a free daily lifestyle guide. "Consider us daily candy for men (and discerning women)," he elaborates. Thrillist is a free e-mail that delivers one recommendation each weekday about the best new eating and drinking spots, events, services, and products for guys in New York who "like to work hard and play harder."He adds, "It's quick, informative, and irreverent."You can sign up at www.thrillist.com and go to the archives section to view recent content. I think my interest is piqued! Thomas Corwin has been spending his spare time skiing, camping, and climbing. This past fall he "returned to academia as a full-time graduate student in New York University's industrial and organizational psychology master's program."Most recently, he has been working as an intern in the Integrated Talent Management Division of IBM, focusing on organizational development projects such as succession planning. Her extracurricular activities include hiking, biking, and enjoying the Adirondack Mountains. She fondly remembers the people and their interest in agriculture, open space, and community development at Cornell. Erika Ruiz, MPA '04, if you're out there, Kimberly would like to hear from you. Julie Langelier and Christian Yunker were wed on September 9, 2006. Reunion will be the event of the year. And I'm sure we are all in the great shape we were in college, so it will feel like nothing has changed. For those of you coming who have not been back since graduation, you will be in for a few surprises. See you all at Rulloff 's! -- Carolyn Deckinger, cmd35@cornell.edu. 03 | Greetings, Class of 2003! It's been a long, rainy winter in Seattle and I'm looking forward to our gorgeous spring and summer seasons. Law school is continuing to treat me well and I am actively seeking out a summer job as a first-year law student in either the Seattle or D.C. area. So far, the competition is rough, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that some good news will come my way in the next couple of weeks. ConnieWong moved up to Washington from California to work at the Hyatt downtown and is really enjoying the city. She recently bought some real estate in the lower Queen Anne area of Seattle and will be moving in soon. Jamie Moriarty wrote in from Illinois, where he is a member of the US Bobsled Team. "The World Cup tournament is for the next three years, then the Olympics in 2010 in Vancouver!"He has been busy with the start-up Ubertap and training and competing for the bobsled team. Luke Collin and I resumed our e-mail correspondence in February, and it was great hearing about his Navy activities in Iraq.He writes, "Once I reported to pre-deployment training in April '06, I realized how important our mission was. Radio-controlled improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were killing lots of the troops, and the Army didn't know how to jam and defeat them. Our mission was to install new jamming systems on their vehicles and then train the soldiers on how to use them. I arrived in Iraq the next month and have been here ever since--although I did get two weeks of R&R over Christmas to go home and see my family. I only have two more months left before I go home for good. My tour over here has been a very formative experience."Over Christmas, Luke went on a ski vacation to Lake Tahoe with two high school friends and Cornell classmates Daniel Luzer, Alexa Mills, and Justin Peters. After graduation, Eli Levine moved to Oregon to work on the 2004 Kerry presidential campaign. He then moved to Washington, DC, to lobby for a nonprofit organization dedicated to separation of church and state issues. He finally experienced a joyous election night after spending a month in Ohio campaigning for Senator Sherrod Brown. If you are a Nationals fan, you may have spotted Eli selling beer with a fake Boston accent. The next time you're at RFK Stadium, shout,"Hey, Beerman!" and see if it's Eli. Eli plans to attend law school in the fall. Hotelie Joanna Kim writes, "After working in food service operations at Goldman Sachs for two years, I've moved to Boston to become a sales consultant for Aramark Refreshment Services! Textile and Apparel major Soule Golden designs costumes in Chicago for the Joffrey Ballet, an internationally acclaimed ballet company. In her spare time, Soule also does freelance design around town; last year she participated in an exhibition at Chicago's Mess Hall and other experimental cultural centers. Currently Soule and classmate Emily Clark, a milliner with Joffrey Ballet, live in a co-op house near the U. of Chicago with 20 other artists/students/life-lovers. VernedaWhite is currently attending EBS London at Regent's College in London, England, for an MBA in international business. Post-Cornell graduation,Verneda joined Macy's Merchandising Group (New York, NY) in private label product development. Upon completing her MBA, Verneda plans to remain in the fashion industry--in fashion marketing/PR--and is currently developing her own apparel brand. With family members affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005,Verneda developed KATRINA IS STILL HERE: Hands on New Orleans T-Shirt Fundraiser by creating two distinct T-shirt designs for men and women that pay homage to the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. As a channel for community outreach under the creative element of fashion design, KATRINA IS STILL HERE: Hands on New Orleans T-Shirt Fundraiser was launched to draw attention to the continuing plight of those affected by Hurricane Katrina and give exposure to the amazing work being done by the volunteers of Hands On New Orleans and Hands On Network. With the potential to grow into a national fundraiser,Verneda is working with Hands On New Orleans in search of needed private or institutional sponsorship for the continuation of the project (www.vernedaAdele.com or contact katrina.tshirt@yahoo.com). Jason Oswalt attends graduate classes and teaches high school geometry and algebra at his high school alma mater, Amador Valley, in Oakland, CA. The program allows him to get his full-time teaching certification for mathematics. Jason excelled in economics at Cornell and thus explains the shortage of math and science teachers in terms of a supply gap. Since most people figure they can maximize their salary by pouring their scientific or mathematical skills into an industry, California and other states find themselves in desperate need of such teachers. Jason made sure to cite this observation, a good indicator of his commitment to integrity both inside and outside of the classroom. Lindsey Plotnick writes that she is in her second year of law school at Fordham U. Next year she will be working for the giant law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP. She lives in NYC and just got an adorable new puppy to help her balance the craziness of law school. You may have seen Brian Eremita's pretty face and well-sculpted body gracing the pages of the premier prepubescent teen magazine, Elle Girl. Always competitive in whatever he does, Brian has made it down to the final two in the magazine's "Last Guy Standing" contest. When he is not modeling or surfing, Brian works long hours exercising his mind as a highway engineer in San Diego, CA. Brian's track and field co-captain, Adam Sansiveri, is also enjoying his run at fame and Hollywood. He has his own entry on the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) that includes some of his modeling portfolio work from Abercrombie and Fitch. Be sure to watch the Hollywood blockbusters The Brave One and The Good Shepherd with friends and family, and tell them that you went to school with one of the actors! David Chai, MCE '06, now lives in sunny Los Angeles and works for Capgemini as a management consultant. He writes that he is aligned with the telecom, media, and entertainment industries and had the pleasure of enjoying Ezra Cornell's bicentennial birthday cake not too long ago with some fellow alumni from the Cornell Club of L.A.He enjoys attending parties in L.A. and has met a good supply of sports and television celebrities. Danielle Thorpe lives in Manhattan on the Upper West Side and is performing in a show called The Girl Detective at the Connelly Theater. She was in a Fringe Festival show over the summer, shot an Everlast fitness wear commercial last month, and did some background work in the upcoming Julie Taymor film, Across the Universe. When she's not performing, she works in the private dining room of Chef Laurent Tourendel's restaurant, BLT Prime. We hope everyone is doing well. Stay in touch--your friends love to hear about you. -- Jennifer Miel, miel.jennifer@gmail.com; and Michelle Wong, michelle.r.wong@gmail.com. 06 | Congratulations '06ers! We are one year graduated from Cornell, one year older, and one year wiser. For many of us this past year was the biggest transition of our lives, moving out on our own and getting a "real" job--a BIG step in growing up. Some of us have already changed our profession, others are still holding strong, and many of us are in medical, law, or graduate school. A year out of school (or one year less to complete), a year more traveled, or even a year refreshed. What are we all up to one year out? Let's start with our 2006 class president.Michael Zuckerman chose to further his education at the Cornell Law School. Although he is stuck in the library most of the time, he enjoys school. He wants to send a shout out to the dynamic and very talented Class of 2006 Council, and wants to note that if anyone is interested in getting involved with the class by volunteering in your local area, get in touch with us at: http://www.alumni.cornell.edu/classes.cfm. A good college buddy of Mike's with similar professional goals is Andrey Spektor, who is in the law school at the U. of Michigan with the aim of focusing on corporate law. This summer Andrey will be heading back home to Long Beach, NY, catching the waves when he is not in Manhattan where he will be working for a federal judge. Cristian Serna, another member of Class Council, decided to take a break from science (Bio major) and is an account manager for Bank of America in Newark, NJ. However, he's still preparing for the MCAT and is applying to post-bac programs for med school in the fall.My dear co-correspondent, Ms. Katie DiCicco, has been keeping extremely busy. Post-graduation, Katie was a summer camp counselor at Maine Teen Camp and taught an array of artistic activities. Back home in NYC, she interned at Court TV in the PR department for two months before heading to L.A. to collaborate on a track with Disney music producers Eddie G. and Andrew Lane, who co-produced this year's number one album,"High School Musical." Back in NYC, she has been gig'ing at local NYC venues, is on the Social Committee for the Young Alumni Association, and does private event planning. Three Long Islanders who grew up in Nassau County have ventured out on their own in the City. Jose Aquino, originally from Levittown and my old elementary schoolmate and orchestra and track buddy, moved into Hell's Kitchen soon after graduation and works for Rainwine Real Estate Group. For all of us who were/are BASE fans, I am delighted to say that Jose is still sporting his amazing hip-hop moves on the side. He is taking dance classes in the city and is part of a hip-hop dance group. Another addition to the city that doesn't sleep is Matthew Halpern '05, originally from Bellmore, who works in structured finance for Ernst & Young, a company he connected with and interned for while still at Cornell. Kara Tarkoff, originally from East Rockaway, also moved into the city post-graduation-- specifically,Murray Hill--and works in Midtown for Guggenheim Advisors, a fund of funds hedge fund. Kara is a junior executive assistant to the CEO and president of the company. The talented and artistic David Garman, who we all can remember from the amazing fashion show that Human Ecology put on, lives in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and works for Steve & Barry's as a corporate recruiter in Port Washington, Long Island. David likes to spend his spare time going to concerts and eventually plans to head back to school for design, possibly for graphic arts. Also from Brooklyn, Samantha Dong is a NYC teaching fellow at Sunset Park Prep M.S. 821 as a science teacher. Once Samantha finishes her master's, she plans to go for her PhD in education as well. Biological and Environmental Engineering major Meera Tandon spent the summer in Ithaca hanging out enjoying sunsets down by the gorges. She then moved to Boston with her friend Yodit Sheido.Meera and Yodit both started careers at CDM, an environmental engineering company in Cambridge, where they work in cubicles across from each other.Meera says, "People often ask us if it's tough to live and work together, but we find it to be a lot of fun, and I think it has helped make the transition from school life to work life a little less traumatic!" Although both are native New Yorkers,Meera is trying to adjust to life in Boston. "It's a little difficult to make new friends in an out-of-college setting, but I think we'll get there soon enough!" Attending London School of Economics for a master's in international political economy, Vincent Greco will be finishing up within a year and then enrolling in a PhD program in political science at either Princeton, Chicago, Columbia, or UCLA.Vinny's good friend Michael Roman is another classmate who chose to stay in Ithaca upon graduation. The job will run until around September 2008, at which point he plans to attend graduate school in the area of planetary science, focusing on atmospheric dynamics. Thereafter Mike hopes to continue doing research and pursuing a career in academia. Mike Merlocco is attending medical school at Case Western Reserve U. in Cleveland, OH.Mike has a love of science, but is a bit unsure of his future plans other than to focus on getting through medical school and completing his residency. Good luck,Mike! Down south in Florida, Dia Beshara works at Eglin Air Force Base as a test engineer in the Air Force. He tests the Air Force's air-to-ground munitions, runs the control room, and communicates with the pilots making sure they run within all the proper parameters. One of our entertaining DJs senior year, Dia continues to DJ in Florida. Eventually he plans to head back to Cornell to receive his MBA and pursue a career in sustainable global enterprise. Jonathan Law is in San Francisco and works at BDE Architecture, a firm that mainly works on multi-family housing developments. He is starting the IDP program and the ARE licensing exams as well. Aside from work, Jon is staying active in two basketball leagues. Also on the West Coast, Lindsay Ulrey works for Ketchum in L.A. as an account coordinator in the entertainment marketing division. She also coaches a girl's soccer team in Beverly Hills and stays very active in the Cornell Club of L.A.
